Nestled in Brick Lane’s adjacent Sclater Street, Type is a beautiful independent run by two artists selling reclaimed vintage furniture, custom made furniture and sustainable products from emerging craftspeople. Type is best known for its vast selection of period and antique typewriters including brands such as Olivetti, Royal and Adler, that make wonderful pieces of art and talking points for your home. For the visually wired and graphically inclined, Type’s old fashioned and authentic typography theme promises to delight with typewriter keychains and hand made greeting cards.

Type is one of Brick Lane’s hidden treasures, with modestly priced vintage furniture made of salvaged steel & old growth wood with a gritty industrial feel set against neon tipped vases, iconic London themed artwork and quirky lamps made from old-school cameras. Type adopts a charming ‘lost and found’ aesthetic, with shabby chic coffee tables fashioned from old wooden floorboards and customised eccentric pieces welded together to create unique art objects.

A coffee table redesigned from an old kindergarten school table costs about £45 and a Type salvaged steel table costs £475.

WeLikeShopping Tip: Explore out of the ordinary decorative home accessories such as Type’s unusual carousel lights to add an injection of kitsch fun to your living room.

I was in London on business when I came across Type, and I wish I was able to shop here and take the furniture back with me. They have an incredible range of reclaimed and upholstered furniture as well as antique wares and contemporary designs. There really is something for everyone here, no matter what your taste might be. As long as you like gorgeous design, you will like Type.

As a design enthusiast and lover of all things vintage, I think that Type is a wonderful shop to visit. The antique typewriters are well worth a look, even if you have no intention of buying one (like me). It's a home decor wonderland and I always feel inspired after visiting Type.

My mum dragged me around here for what felt like forever! I have no interest in furniture or typewriters so in all honestly I would rather be anywhere than in Type. That said though, the sales assistant was very chatty and friendly which always matters, and they had some pretty cool stuff - the lighting made out of jerry cans is an awesome idea!

This is an utterly brilliant design store which features artwork, lighting, antique typewriters and furniture. I love this store because they will hand type a letter for you on one of their old machines, so that you can send it to a loved one. The letters look amazing and it's such a unique idea!
